Venerable Ato Rinpoche

Ato Rinpočhe

Rinpoche himself has divided his life into three stages: a monk in Tibet; fugitive in India, who attended to politics on a call of H.H. 16th Karmapa; common person working in Europe. In Tibet Rinpoche spent all together ten years in meditation retreats, he travelled and was trained in monasteries of all four Tibetan traditions. After escaping to India in the year 1959 Ato Rinpoche was called by H.H 16th Karmapa to represent all schools of Kagyu lineage in the Tibetan exile government. On a request of Trungpa Rinpoche, his close friend, he overtook the leadership of the young tulku´s monastery (reincarnated teachers) including all four lineages.

In 1967 Ato Rinpoche has married a British Christian woman with whom he has brought up a daughter and he moved to England. There he worked as a male nurse at psychiatric department in a hospital for 12 years. Although he had been living in England for a long time, no one had known him as a high spiritual master. After serious work accident Ato Rinpoche had retired. Since then on a request of H.H 16th Karmapa and other Tibetan masters and also many western practicioners he started to give teachings. During the last years Ripoche has provided the reconstruction of the Nezang monastery which was flattened during the Cultural revolution in Tibet.

An uncle of Ato Rinpoche is the previous Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and previous Sangye Njempa Rinpoche. Ato Rinpoche was recognized by 11th Great Tai Situ Rinpoche as the 8th incarnation of Tenzin Tulku – abbot of the old Nezang Monastery of Karma Kagyu lineage. His first masters were Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and 2nd Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche – Palden Khyentse Özer, son of the 15th Karmapa and Dakini from Tsurpu – who was the previous incarnation of the Venerable Khandro Rinpoche.
